New presentation toy

August 1 2003

Yesterday, I attended the Lotus team's midwest regional meeting.  Good to see my old colleagues -- we've had a remarkably stable team here, and many of the sales managers or IT specialists are people I've worked with my full Lotus/IBM career.
In addition to good camraderie and a nice dinner at Maggiano's, I picked up a lead on a great new computer toy.
A couple of the other presenters had these great combo wireless mouse/laser pointer devices.  Very easy to set up and use.  No special driver needed, and a small footprint by plugging into the USB port.  Well, thirty seconds of use and I was hooked!!!  I know that wireless presentation mice have existed for years, but the small footprint of the USB interface, and the ease of use on this one were immediately attractive.
Thus, shortly after rushing home, I was surfing the web to find my very own Flex Pointer.  First find was on the CompUSA website, US$60.  My colleague Glen had suggested it would cost around US$30, so CompUSA was looking a little out of the ballpark.  Time to turn to trusty eBay.  Now that was more like it, as there was a "buy it now" for $29.95.  Such a deal -- and done.
Now, the question is, how will this affect my presentations???  I already have a tendency to be a bit, uh, animated in my presentations, and now I've cut the cord...this ought to be interesting.

We've been using something similar around here - after trying various units we settled on a Logitec unit that uses Bluetooth for its connectivity. Its the only one that hasn't frazzled the presenter with range and position problems. The best thing of all? - not a single driver needed to make it work on Win2000 which for me is the ultimate device as you can safely hand it to anyone who wants to present and you know it will work flawlessly.

As a gadget hound this is a must have. Also bobbing down all the time to click the mouse can be distracting in a presentation. There I've justified getting one...I'm off to eBay. :o)
