Krispy Kreme coming to London
August 10 2003
Opening just in time for my visit during the
Admin/Developer
conference (you have registered
already, haven't you?)...
A Krispy Kreme in London. Intriguingly, it's going to be at Harrod's.
Irony of the proletariat-ish American donut making its London debut
among the bourgeois?
See here
for example.
For those who don't know Krispy Kreme, they have to be the best doughnuts
on Earth. Especially, mainly, if they are hot and fresh. They
simply melt in your mouth then.
You may be wondering why I write about Krispy Kremes and Starbucks and
the like. I don't even frequent either place all that often (Krispy
Kreme almost never, actually). But I love the pop culture aspect
of both chains.
You know, it's a good thing I work at home. Even the one day I was
downtown (Chicago) last week, I felt compelled to buy a Starbucks Frapuccino.
Put me someplace where I'd have even easier access to Starbucks and
Krispy Kreme, and it would be very very bad news.

Well it's at Wellington Circle in Medford to be exact, but Krispy Kreme call it their first Boston outlet. It will be interesting to see how it holds up against the local boys, Dunkin Donuts. Now I wonder when Cick Fila will arrive...

and Sonic and Whataburger for that matter (though I can't see any of those places moving into Boston, or Chicago for that matter. I wouldn't mind if Jack-in-the-Box came back to Chicago, though, I used to love that place when I was a kid.
Boston market is really interesting -- a lot of local chains (D'Angelo's instead of Subway, Papa Gino's instead of Pizza Hut). I've always wondered about why that is, but I suspect I don't want to know the answer).

I love Frapuccion's,
I got addicted to them when they were first introduced into Starbucks in the Uk 3 or so years a go. Every morning starts with a Venti-Moccha_Frap (VMF).
Its go to the point where all I have to do is enter our local Starbucks and they begin preparing it !!! (How Sad)
The worst thing is when I add up the cost of my addiction. In the Uk a VMF costs £3.00. So thats 15 pounds a week, 60 a month, 720 a year. Now to earn that at 40% income tax % NI I need to earn about 1500 a year to pay for it.
Its a more expensive habit thab smoking. And as I have cream on mine, probably no healthier!!!
Looking foreward to your presentation at the conference. For years I have failed to persuabe various employes that I should go to Lotussphere... But finally I think that I have persuaded my current employer that admin/dev would be a ggod investment....

So it it like this everywhere else...or is it just in the Pacific NW? Whenever a KK comes to town...you have to stand in line for hours to get your first donut! The one that opened on 82nd Ave just recently in Clackamas, OR...people camped overnight to get a fresh donut! Unbelievable!!!

Nice topic for coming to work hungry! @Gayle -- Krispy Kreme originated in the South. http://www.krispykreme.com/history.html @Ed -- Working away from the house is expensive! We have a Torrefazione Italia coffee shop in our complex of buildings which has great gilato. Across the street is a new Peets Coffee. Next to Peets is Starbucks. On the other side of Peets is a PCC with a coffee stand in it. Across the street east from Starbucks is a cafe that sells coffee drinks. Across the street north from Starbucks is a small coffee shop. Down one block from Starbucks west is a bakery that sells coffee drinks. Down two blocks from Starbucks west is Cafe Ladro coffee shop. Across the street from Cafe Ladro is Fremont coffee. Four blocks east of the office is a small coffee shop that I've never been to. Why would anyone walk four blocks for coffee? I could probably afford to retire now if I worked at home!

there is a barnes & noble store here in tampa. well there are a few of them, but the one i'm thinking of is on the north side of town.
of course, this store has a lot of very wonderful objects inside that i like to go and look at. books, mostly.
inside the b&n store is a starbucks cafe, sort of a mini version i guess. maybe not, i think the entire menu is represented. they even have cheesecakes and stuff. and a big area with quite a few tables to sit at and eat and drink. come to think of it, it is probably bigger than most starbucks stores. as if that isn't temptation enough (books, cds, coffee and desert), in the next parking lot over from b&n is a krispy kreme. i'm totally not kidding. its a dangerous few acres of land...
