Back in the....

So I'm sitting in the lobby of the Moscow Renaissance Hotel on a 1 MB wifi connection.  For a mere US$36 per day.  But that's likely cheaper than dialup-- there's no local access number in Russia.  So we'll go with this...
Quick first impressions -- a lot  of new construction since my last visit, two years ago.  The road in from Shermetyevo Airport is now lined with car dealers...along with IKEA, a huge supermarket, and of course, McDonald's.
I haven't seen this anywhere else -- in Russia, you can pay a fee to bypass the queues at immigration.  I looked around on a few websites before leaving, and the lowest quote I saw was US$62. Based on my last visit, I didn't think this was at all necessary.... I was through in five minutes. This time, there was only one agent open -- and four flights arrived at once. Eventually, they opened some additional queues, but it still took about 30 minutes.  Not too terribly bad in the end.
My colleague Mike Hayward just asked me, "are you blogging over there?"  Why yes, Mike, I am!
We're heading out for dinner in a bit.... more later....
