"Bolshoi" -- what does the word conjure in your mind?  Americans probably think of the Bolshoi ballet, the renowned Russian dance company.  It sure sounds exotic, right?

This famous organization come by its name honestly.  Their theatre in Moscow is the Bolshoi theatre.  Looking behind the curtain, though, removes some of the exoticism from the discussion.
In Russian, "Bolshoi" is the word for "big".  The Bolshoi theatre = the big theatre.  One wonders if these incredible dancers would draw the crowds they do if they toured the world as "The Big Ballet".  Perhaps not.  But the use of the Russian word conveys everything you need to know -- and has made them one of the most successful ballet companies in the world.
