Anthony Holmes: Notes 8.5 Roaming
June 3 2008
Anthony takes a look at the return of -- and enhancements to -- roaming user support in the beta of Notes 8.5:
I've reviewed the Notes 8.5 Public Beta 1 documentation on Roaming. As well as allowing the Notes 8.5 Standard client to roam like previous versions, there are some enhancements, including the ability to use a file server, and the ability to roam Administrator and Designer preferences.Anthony also mentions that support for Notes on a USB memory stick is back in 8.5, and the release notes confirm that:
Notes 8.5 adds support for Notes standard configuration installation and use from a USB drive.Good to see the return of these features to the 8.x codestream.

Rene:
You're right, the Beta Documentation for 8.5 is only referring to running Notes Basic on a stick. I read that bit a little too quickl. My bad. Thanks for pointing to the official statement.

How about sametime configurations when roaming? It seems to me, that in 8.0.1, all configuration goes lost whenever you switch user. Will that be fixed?

Does the Workplace finally roam? Roaming without the chicklets is pretty senseless.

@4, I completely agree, ST should roam too. And it should be tied to the location.

Glad to see that roaming is coming back as a supported configuration for the Standard client.
Also, support for Nomad was never dropped in 8.0.x. IBM only supported the Basic configuration with Nomad - which should be more than enough for accessing your applications from a stick. And unless you have your Nomad Client on an actual USB external Hard Drive, it should be really fun with all of the reads and writes being performed on a USB flash drive... Did you know that there are more files in a Notes Standard install than the base Windows Server 2003 installation?!?
