An exciting day has arrived as "C4", IBM Connections 4, is now available!

IBM Connections has been named the market leader in social software for three consecutive years. This new release extends IBM's technology lead by introducing key new capabilities:

  • Activity Streams - a homepage full of useful content, not just from within the Connections environment, but anywhere
  • OpenSocial 2.0 and embedded application experiences - never leave the context of what you're doing to participate in application workflow, forms processing, and real-time content. No more static "last-known" information. We're putting this in Notes and iNotes too.
  • Expanded mobile capabilities to provide a complete social platform anytime, anywhere
  • Enhancements to microblogging, communities, and social analytics
  • And coming September 20, IBM Connections Mail, providing the first social mail experience for both Domino and Exchange users.
You'll have several opportunities to learn about Connections 4 in the coming days, including today's IBM Collaboration Solutions community webcast, next Thursday's "From Liking to Leading: The Success of Your Business Is Social" event, and more content on ibm.com and elsewhere. When Connections Mail is available in two weeks, I'll be blogging more about this new innovative capability too!

    Hi,

Video is missing. I am downloading Connection 4 from the PA but this is a second page where video about Connections 4 is published but not displaying.

When/will Files & Profiles be available for Notes/Domino customers? Can't see it on PA - only Connections 3.x is listed.

@6 the entitlement will be updated at the next Notes/Domino release, which is standard procedure for all entitlements at IBM. Entitlements are fixed to a particular release and have to be updated when the primary program gets updated.

Thanks for clarifying Ed - so that will be 8.5.4 in Feb?

Trying to gain traction for a limited deployment here, was hoping to get early access prior to Notes Social Edition arriving but guess I'll have to wait...

Ed, just curious how many seats of IBM Connections have been sold? You mentioned it is the market leader, but what does that mean exactly? Leading against who/what exactly? Just curious...

  1. 10  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@8 that's the plan. I think the files and profiles capabilities in the current entitlement are very solid... there are improvements in C4 of course, but I wouldn't wait five months...

    @9 I don't think that IBM has disclosed seats sold, but the way IDC measures market share is through their estimates of vendor revenue. Competitors include Jive, Microsoft, Cisco, Taligent and others. See here: { Link }

Gooc move to include mail. Might be a chance for IBM to be more aggressive in gaining back some email market share, particularly if you included the ability for Outlook clients to access it too over time.

@11 Connections already has several plug-ins for Microsoft Outlook, and the new Connections Mail capability in C4 can access both Domino or Exchange back-ends. So regardless of email server choice, you can use the best social platform in the market.

Thank you Ed for this excellent post, this is the time to start or expand social business with Connections!

Having deployed connections 3 by following the Zero to Hero guide, will IBM do something similar for upgrading to 4? End users pushing for an early upgrade after seeing the revamped UI.

Hi, can I please have more detail on the Cognos BI entitlement?

Connections v4 license agreement mentions Cognos BI and BI Transformer are licensed with the program. I would like to know what this actually means.

Does this mean I can run Cognos BI 10 without admin license? or does it mean with Connections v4 license I won't need Cognos BI Consumer license to consume reports?

  1. 16  Kam  |

@15 myself... looking at the installation document, the Cognos entitlement with Connections is literally for analysing data within Connections. I am guessing no need for any other Cognos BI license at all to use.
