Canadian readers of this blog will certainly remember Jamie Houston, who was most recently the Lotus messaging sales specialist in Canada.  Jamie had a long-running battle with cancer.  She died earlier this week.

In an organization filled with passionate people, Jamie's energy, enthusiasm, and commitment stood out.  She always was a strong advocate for her customers, and for the Lotus brand and strategy.  On a personal level, Jamie was up for any adventure.  She took me to Whistler (!) for my first-ever skiing attempt, stopped at a roadside shack for jerk chicken in Jamaica, and detoured on a drive back from a customer to check out a cheese shop in her own town, as excited as I was to explore.  She wasn't afraid to speak her mind, but that meant that she was a tireless advocate for her customers.  I admired Jamie's passion for life on many levels, and I am saddened that it came to an end, way too soon.

My condolences to Jean-Noel, Jamie's husband, and to her family and friends.  Her spirit will be missed.

Update 25 February, 2 PM EST:  Jean wrote me that he has read all of the wonderful comments left here.  He writes:  For those interested, a celebration of Jamie's life will be held this Saturday, March 1st, 2pm at Grand Harbour, Building 'C', Popellia Lounge, 2287 Lakeshore Blvd. W. Etobicoke M8V 3Y1.

Donations in Jamie's memory may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Very sad indeed. I worked with Jean for many years, and through him met Jamie. I then of course worked with Jamie on Lotus related items. My best wishes to Jean and Jamie's family. She really was one of those bright stars you hear about that burned out too soon.

Knowing Jamie as I did I know she will continue to be with us in spirit. She always spoke very highly of Ed and Alan and considered you both kindered spirits.

Her smile and passion were contagious. Her beliefs strong, and her sense of right and wrong unimpeachable. She encouraged me in more ways than I am able to count and will NEVER be forgotten.

When you remember Jamie remember passion for Lotus. It was a large part of her being.

I hope to see you soon Jean.

I knew Jamie for at least 6 years - I thought very highly of her, admired her, and looked forward to seeing her whenever I knew our paths would cross. She had spunk, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude about everything. I last saw her at Lotusphere 2007 and we spent over an hour chatting in the departure lounge at the airport in Orlando after the conference ended. What a classy lady - a huge loss for us all who knew her, and a huge loss for IBM/Lotus as she was a tireless advocate for this technology that has brought us together in community.

We'll miss you Jamie. Until next time...

I had worked with Jamie over the last 2 years. She will be missed as a member of every team she was on, including her family's. My thoughts are with them all.

I... I... am shocked at the loss.

Jamie was one of the first to welcome me at Lotus (when it was Lotus, period) over 10 years ago and from the first moment she was a good friend, a great colleague and above all, a wonderful person and soul. She was always a shining example of everything a member of the Lotus family could be and I always aspired to be as good as her. Despite my efforts, I never have been. I honestly don't think anyone has or ever will.

I extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to Jamie's family.

I, like my Lotus colleagues in Canada, will also mourn her. I feel the world to be a lesser place now that this bright soul has left it.

I'm sure IBMers and friends throughout the Americas are saddened to lose such a wonderful person as Jamie. I visited many customers throughout Atlantic Canada with her. The customers and I always looked forward to her vists, as her skills and spunk were both treasured.

I remember the Lotusphere before last, when Jamie told me the cancer had come back. She knew the chances of beating it a second time were slim, but while I sniffled and blubbered she refused to feel sorry for herself. Over the last two years she probably lived more than some people do in a lifetime. Over the last few months the emails had stopped, and I feared the worst. I had to pull over to the side of the road when Tyrone sent me the email. Jamie was my friend. I wished we had done the plane ride kiddo. Too bad the weather Gods got in the way. I should have tried again. Am I ever going to miss you.

My fondest memories of Jamie will be for her hallmark devotion to those around her. She was genuiunely interested in the welfare of her friends, peers and colleagues. Jamie had great listening skills. She could be counted on to champion the downhearted and bolster flagging spirits. Altho' I had too few interactions with Jamie during recent years it was always uplifting to be in her presence.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jean-Noel and the family.

I worked with Jamie for over 12 years on various Lotus Notes projects, she always brought such a positive enthusiasm to every situation... I can only hope I can display that same attitude and spunk she always had in memory of Jamie. We will certainly miss Jamie in our Canadian Market, in our workplace and in our personal lives. Thanks for the many great times, conversations and strategy brain storming sessions !!

I will miss her support and friendship. My condolences to her family and friends.

    We're all in shock...

Even when going through rough times with treatments, she still managed to wear a BIG smile and PUT one on every single face she met. That's how I'll remember Jamie; unfailing smile an courage like I've seldom seen.

My condolences to her loved ones.

I didn't know Jamie for all that long, but her enthusiasm and perseverance in both her work and personal lives was inspiring. I'll be thinking of her the next time I'm on a beach in Barbados ...

I first heard of Jamie when I was working for Lotus in the UK in 1993. She had just left to return to Canada, but the Staines crew were raving about what a great person she was.

Our paths crossed immediately when I returned to Toronto, and since then, I've enjoyed her down to earth approach, working with her customers and projects.

    We've lost someone special.

    Dear Jamie;

You where always so quick to get on a plane and give your time to promote the things that you belived in. The last time we got the chance to do this together was a call on a customer in Moncton. But we where early for the call, so we took the time to take a drive to the coast. It was a spectacular warm fall day, with the sun bouncing of the water like dimonds and the trees in their full colour. We took the time to have a chat, to laugh and to breath in the beauty of nature. This is a memory I will never forget.

    You will be missed.

I was privileged to have worked very closely with Jamie and when I think of her it brings a smile to my face. I was the software specialist in Jamaica and with Jamie launched the first domino user group in the Caribbean. I was also with Ed at that jerk shack and I have countless other memories such as lotusphere in florida, she meeting my grandparents and me driving her to Ocho Rios for the JCS conference. Jamie was more than a coworker she was a friend. I will definately miss her.

Jamie had a profound impact on my life. It was her passion for Lotus Notes/Domino that inspired me to start Collaborative Learning Network, a successful Lotus Business Partnership in Edmonton, Alberta.

I met Jamie in 1996 when she was with the Lotus Education Team. Through her tireless efforts and infectious enthusiasm she established a base of education customers across Canada. Her efforts contributed to the establishment of highly successful eLearning programs based on Lotus Notes/Domino at the Centre for Innovative Management at Athabasca University and with the K-12 Education Argyll Home Education Centre with Edmonton Public Schools.

It was Jamie’s constant encouragement and support that helped me through the first few challenging years of a new company start up. She always went the extra mile and helped me to cut through IBM’s “Blue Tape” on many occasions. She encouraged collaboration between business partners and was a feisty advocate with IBM/Lotus on behalf of her customers.

Jamie was an open person. She was comfortable speaking about her illness, but always remained optimistic. I remember wagging my finger at her on numerous occasions, asking her to slow down. But, she was unstoppable.

For me and for many Canadian Business Partners, Jamie was the jewel in the crown of IBM/Lotus!

IBM was lucky to have someone with Jamie’s passion evangelizing Lotus Software.

I was lucky to call Jamie friend. I loved her like a little sister and I will miss her dearly!

Oh this is such sad, sad news...

I worked with Jamie back in 1989 in the UK. I was the admin assistant for the UK Systems Engineer team and Jamie and Bill were both SE's in the team. Jamie was so welcoming and helpful to me as I was then, very young and inexperienced in the corporate ways. She advised me in my fledgling Lotus career and I was very grateful for her support and encouragement.

I too ran into her at Lotusphere last year and was so sad to hear her news but not surprised to find her upbeat and determined.

The Lotus family has lost one of the original greats, we will all miss her.

I am from Jamaica and meeting Jamie Houston was my launching pad of experiences and triumph in upgrading Lotus Notes at my company. Her enthusiasm and her friendship had me won over to her. The times she came to Jamaica and those times she ensured we were well taken care of at Lotusphere. She triumphed the vision of Lotus Notes and I am proud to have met her. Today I am a Lotus Notes acheiver because of my acquaintance with her. You will be remembered for those great moments, I am just sorry I never got the chance to see you to laugh and smile one more time.

Keep smiling girl you were wonderfully made.

My condolences to Jamie's family> Loosing someone so young is very difficult, as I can attest to after the loss of my sister-in-law 2 years ago. It makes you wonder why her and why now? All of these thoughts apply to Jamie as well, and I can only hope that she is suffering less and having fun where ever she is, as I am sure is the case.

She was our IBM/Lotus rep for countless years and was always so willing to jump in and help with whatever the problem or question was. Her positive outlook and approach to every challenge made them seem much less daunting. I will miss her greatly.

    Jamie,

The first time I met you years ago, you were driving your little olive green miata and were so passionate and full of life that I admired you from the very first moment and thought...that's the kind of person I want to be.

Your kindness and caring loving soul will always be remembered.

my prayers and thoughts are with you Jean-Noel and your family.

I met Jamie a couple of years ago when she participated in our System i cross-country Canadian roadshow. She was passionate, funny and extremely credible... the customers loved her. We talked about our common connection in the Caribbean as I had been part of the Caribbean North District for years. She was actually on her way to Jamaica and taking her husband after our roadshow, and so looking forward to it.

I didn't know Jamie for a long time, but I thought of her often. I was shocked and saddened to hear the news. My sincere condolences go out to her husband and family... a huge loss, missed by all she touched.

I'm sorry to be reading this on March 2nd or I would have been at the memorial yesterday. I worked with Jamie in the 90s and we'd bump into each other once in a while over the years. She was always a driving, passionate force and will surely be missed dearly by those closest to her. My condolences go out to them. We all need to remember and embrace as our own the enthusiasm and spirit that she showed.

I had the priviledge of working with Jamie as part of the Lotus Academic Team. She was one of the most positive people that I have ever met. With Jamie, the glass was always half full. The world has lost a very beautiful person far too soon.

I first met Jamie when I joined Lotus back in December 1986 with Bill. Jamie was as bright and cheerful back then as she ever was. That star never lost her shine. The place won't be the same.

I met Jamie when we worked for Lotus in the UK. I was there from 1989 to 1993. There were many bright, enthusiastic and committed people, some are still sharp in my memory and Jamie is most defintely one of those. I remember her smile, her humour and kind, considerate manner. I remember a party she held in her house in Fulham, West London. The comments people have left here are totally in sync with the person I briefly knew. She must be missed so terribly by those close to her, a great loss for all of you.
