Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5 news coming this morning
November 20 2008
It's 1:41 AM in Wellington, New Zealand and I should be sleeping. Since I will be sleeping in a couple of hours when this news goes out.... IBM and one of the device manufacturers will be announcing the expansion of Lotus Notes Traveler support to the manufacturer's line of Sybmian-based devices, in addition to Windows Mobile, in the Notes/Domino 8.5 release. I'll update this post when I wake up with a link to the press release and the name of the manufacturer....

It isn't public yet? ;-) and is it still valid that you won't make it in time but it'll be late for about 2 weeks?

@3 Bad Nathan, Bad Bad Nathan. Dyslexics are suddenly looking at this post with a completely different perspective. *snicker*

Hm. Now why did I miss the typo in Ed's post, see it in Nathan's comment, and assume Nathan has a dirty mind? Says something about both of us, I suspect, Nathan. :D

It is nice that the client plattform will be extended, but i think it is more important to support Traveler on other server platforms then windows. In our company we have an ibm i/5 and cannot use IBM Lotus traveler. This is really sad.

@Nathan/Rob,

I thought Traveller (sic) on Symbian/Nokia was old news?

Bill Brown | 11/20/2008 8:38:43 AM
I'm waiting to see Traveler on Simian(tm) based devices. What better platform to support that email monkey on your back?

@8 - I think it says something about Ed, actually. :-)

Stuart McIntyre http://blog.collaborationmatters.com | 11/20/2008 8:43:44 AM
Good news - interesting that this is being introduced ahead of the rest of the 8.5 release.
@9 I would second that, support for Linux is really important too.

@14 I'm guessing that this will be in 8.0.3 as well, which should be out around then.

How sad is it that I had to search to figure out what the typo could possibly have that could be a sick reference?
I wonder, does Verizon carry any of these Nokia devices? I will have to check. It could be my excuse not to buy a Storm tomorrow.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb here and say this isn't quite the response Ed had in mind when he posted this. Sorry for thread-jacking your blog right down into the gutter, Ed!

looks like a real easy alternative to my blackberry - it would be brilliant if this was included on some of the VOIP / SIP wifi enabled phones from Nokia - Blackberry do seem to fall short with VOIP / SIP
- 21
Andre H http://www.ytria.com | 11/20/2008 11:32:07 AM
Hi Sean, yep seems that the Traveller will work with a few Nokias that include Voip. I use the N95-8GB a lot and must say the SIP is amazing. You can call internationally with no roaming charges and great call quality wherever you find a wifi network..!
Be aware there is no voip in the N96 (?!)

Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com | 11/20/2008 12:27:05 PM
@16 no, no plan to bring back into 8.0.3.
@9 other server platforms are on the 2009 roadmap.
@All re typo - it was 1:44 AM, but I am glad I could provide you some entertainment :)

So this means Howard Stern uses Lotus Notes and a Sybmian in the studio :-P

This is good news.
Question:
Since Lotus Notes Traveler is purely a email / calendar client for mobile devices. Does anyone know of a Mobile Management tool, like Intellisync Mobile suite, that is recommended by IBM and is compatible to run alongside Lotus Traveler.

Carlos | 11/20/2008 7:37:48 PM
It gets a mention on Engadget

John Head http://www.johndavidhead.com | 11/20/2008 8:01:03 PM
@20 - MINO is a decent VIOP solution for the blackberry .. and there are other solutions. Plus, IM+ for Skype works on the blackberry

David Bell | 11/20/2008 11:12:34 PM
@9 - you do know you can run a Traveler server on Windows to provide service to remote Domino Servers on any platform ?
Only the Traveler server needs to be running Windows.
- 29
Ralf M Petter | 11/21/2008 2:28:56 AM
@28 Yes i am aware of this, but in our company we have a policy to not use Windows as a server os. So i can not use Domino on the windows platform. But we are thinking about a migration from the system i to Suse Linux Enterprise server. So Traveler on Linux will be a option for us.
- 30
Peter Bell | 11/21/2008 4:59:13 AM
@29: We're running Domino on RedHat 4 and use DME ({ Link } ) running on RedHat as well.
This solution sync mail/calendar/contacts with all our different mobile phones (Nokia, SonyEricsson, HTC and iPhone).
- 31
Jan-Erik Larsen | 11/21/2008 6:21:42 AM
@25 The lack of (so far announced) mobile device management in Traveler is a show stopper for many of my customers who want to move over from Intellisync, but they are pleased with the PIM sync functionality.
- 32
Andy Moore http://www.ibm.com/uk | 11/21/2008 7:17:39 AM
@26 I wouldn't exactly call it a mention on Engadget, I'd call it a misinformed troll post / flamebait! :
Quote:
"There's hardly anything more embarrassing that admitting that your company still uses Lotus Notes"
I'm an IBMer, I do post sales support on Domino in the UK, and I will be testing this on my N95-8GB ASAP :-)

John Head http://www.johndavidhead.com | 11/21/2008 11:52:06 AM
@31 Traveler will never be a complete replacement for a solution like Intellisync. That product will always be more feature rich. Traveler is designed to be the entry point.
- 34
Ashish Daga http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au | 11/23/2008 11:54:37 PM
@31 & @33 Any suggestions on Mobile Device Management tool that can be used in conjunction with Lotus Traveler.
Intellisync is what we currently use and have had a lot of trouble with. I would appreciate if any one can recommend a product that they currenly use or are trialling.
We basically use devices that run on Windows Mobile 6.0 / 6.1 with a view to use Symbian devices in the future.
- 35
Peter Bell | 11/24/2008 1:49:06 AM
@34 As I wrote above (@30), we're using DME { Link } We used IntelliSync and should have replaced it loong time ago.
DME includes PIM sync and device management and works really nice.
- 36
Kim Udklit http://www.sjaelsoe.dk | 12/3/2008 9:58:47 AM
Not affiliated with DME in any way, but this product really delivers ! Exellent PIM sync. with advanced 'on-device' encryption and kill-pill functionality if stolen.
Buy these guys Lotus, and launch a Domino Mobile Sync Server.
Runs on Linux and Windows and supports a range of mobile devices, including iPhone. Great web-interface for managing devices and so on and so on ...
