In a meeting yesterday, I learned that (post-beta 3), Notes 7 will have the ability to filter calendar display by type of entry....

We've had the feature request thread and one of the things made crystal clear; we want (need) a whole new GUI. Sorry, but that dialog doesn't look very modern to me.

ok, so that this thread doesn't devolve -- let's be clear upfront. Notes 7.0 is going to maintain the existing GUI structure. 7.0 is a release more focused on server/designer improvements than client, but the client will get a bunch of major enhancements. The beta has been out for almost a year, and you should know what is being delivered next quarter. This is not the point in the cycle to change that plan.

Post 7.0, this "whole new GUI" thought is very top of mind. Kevin Cavanaugh and I are preparing the Notes/Domino strategy presentation for DNUG/IBM Technical Forum in two weeks, and we will definitely be talking about this at that time.

    Ed,

I just collected a whole bunch of remarks from endusers, after completing an R5 to ND654 migration. They are generally happy with 6.5, but there's always something to complain about :-) Does it make sense to post those issues in the ND7 forum? Or could I send it elsewhere?

    Thanks,

Gerco (this time using the browser from within the WCT Rich client :-)

The ND7 forum is an OK place, or the BP Forum. If it is a LONG list, you can e-mail me and I'll try to get product management/development to take a look.

Whilst this feature is nice and will help to unclutter the calendar view, I would love to be able to choose to filter out additional appointment information like: Subject, Room, Location, Chair, timeslots, per calendar view. So I would filter out timeslots and chair from my Monthly(So I can read the subject line!), but leave them in for the daily or weekly!

Instead of "Filter Calendar by Type" make it "Filter Calendar by Entry Type". Same goes for the text above the list. Change it to "Select entry type to filter by".

This will then match the text used in the Calendar/To Do UI more closely.

Make this dialog a drop down from one of the tabs in the Calendar view as well.

@5 Simon, you may already know this, but I just wanted to make sure. If you hover your mouse over a calendar entry, the full subject, chair, etc will be diplayed in a popup. This should help you read the information in the monthly view.

Why "repeat" the "filter calendar by type" (using another expression filter vs filtering) : it's already in the window title. Or just merge with the text above so dialog looks simpler !

@8, I am aware of the pop up Alan, what I would like to do is hide that information from my monthly view, so I can actually see the description, without it getting truncated or having to mouse over my various appointments! This is a big gripe with our senior management and assistants!

Admin 2005 scared my manager in regards to ND7. He attended the Track 8: What's New in Release 7 Upgrading to 7 Speaker: Jessica Couto. From slides 55-65 she lists known issues with ND7. Some have been corrected already but many haven't. My manager wants to probably hold off until the first 7.0x release. That may be good, but with IBM having around 50,000 users is it really as bad as Jessica apparently made it out to be?

  1. 12  Ed Brill www.edbrill.com |

@11 - since ND7 hasn't shipped, doesn't it seem logical that the remaining months in the schedule would be used to address those issues????

  1. 13  Chris Whisonant http://cwhisonant.blogspot.com |

That's what I was thinking, but from talking to my manager, the last part of that presentation was portrayed to dissuade people from going to ND7.0 and "let others deal with and find the problems."

  1. 14  Ed Brill www.edbrill.com |

@13 Chris, I just looked at the PDF of that presentation (Thanks to Susan and Kathleen for tracking it down for me).

From the "7 key points to take home": "Known issues with Beta 3 version – check when gold arrives – <b>most problems should be fixed</b>" So I'm not sure if it is how Jessica portrayed it or the interpretation of the listener :-o

Hey Ed - I looked up the SPRs listed in Jessica's slideshow:

    Slide 55 - is an R5 issue

    Slide 57 - Isn't a bug, but a setting

    Slide 58 - was fixed in the D6 codestream - April 12, 2005

Slide 59 - Is simply a result of the new security features in Domino 6, not 7 and is not a bug, just a change

    Slide 60 - Fixed Feb 2, 2005

    Slide 61 - Fixed Feb 3, 2005

Slide 62 - is a Netscape limitation, not a Notes bug

Slide 63 - was fixed today (June 1)

    Slide 64 - was fixed May 28, 2005

In Jess's defense, we have to turn in our slides in January, and the lifespan of a bug in beta software is short, so these are all fixed.

Your boss should rest assured that no customer will be the first to 'experience pain' in new Notes software - we in Lotus and IBM as well as our beta customers are WAY out in front in testing and using the product every day.

Can you also make bulleted lists "end" when you press the return key twice? I'm not sure if Word Perfect 5 was ever this troublesome.

  1. 17  Chris Whisonant http://cwhisonant.blogspot.com |

@15 - Susan, thanks for the information. I will take that to my boss. I knew it couldn't be that bad! I knew from LS05 that over 30,000 IBMers are already using ND7 (has to be over 50k now, huh?). That alone attests to its stability. Didn't I hear someone say that they thought the ND7 Beta 3 was more stable than 6.5.3? =)

Dagnabbit, I had to remind myself to put this response in my blog, not in a comment!

    { Link }

Must use the blog more over this next month or two! *sighs*

I'd really like to see that new filter feature combined with the new calendar cleanup. Calendar cleanup only lets you specify a date and delte everything before then. I want to remove certain types of calendar entries from the past but not others...i.e. I want to remove appointments and meetings, but not all day events, which I use to track where I am (was). I know I can do it with an agent but it would be a nice addition to the UI.
