Vowe, try to login again after first time to check the speed again. I agree with you that my first impression, on the first login, was to be very slow, but after (I think) the user has been setup, it seems better.
Ed, if this is true it would be better to give users advice.

Ed, it's nice to see you talk about Workplace occasionally. My company has made a major commitment to WebSphere portal and Workplace collaboration services. Our license also gives us the right to use quickplace and sametime instead of the workplace J2EE components. As chief architect, since our strategy is J2EE and we have few deployments of Domino in our group, I'm pushing the deployment of workplace. But since we've made the decision, IBM has become very bullish around Domino, which did appear to be non-strategic. Given the maturity of Workplace, the problems we've had implementing it, and the very poor support from IBM, I'm wondering if I shouldn't change our shift and focus on Domino.
By the way, the next time you're in Paris, you're welcome to come by and see what a real client is trying to do with Workplace. We feel somewhat alone and on the bleeding edge right now.

Bart, thanks for that.
First, I was only in Paris for the weekend -- if I had been able to get there on a business day, I had a few customers to visit...next time...
I think the answer is, it depends on your organizational objectives, your technology direction, your business/technology needs. So I can't give you an answer here as to which part of the technology stack is the right place for your organization to start today. I'd be curious about "very poor support" though -- there are teams in place specifically to assist with customers adopting Workplace today. So, if you want to contact me offline (ed_brill....us.ibm.com), maybe we can look into that.

Bart, maybe you could leverage some external help with portal / workplace / domino from a talended IBM Business Partner company located in Paris ;)
More seriously, We've made a lot of investment in Portal / Workplace and are already helping many customers get the best of all the workplace family without forcing any of them to migrate or stay or something, simply trying to be true advisors.
If you think our experience can help you and complement IBM support, feel free to drop me an email mbk@acamaya.com
PS : that's not an advertisement for the company I work for and that's the first time I do this so noone can blame me (I hope), just trying to help.

Works just fine with Firefox 1.06 here, had some problems with FX 1.5 Beta when I tried on Wednesday. All in all it's looking pretty good.

@1 feedback from development: What we have found is that people commonly use the incorrect email address format when setting up their account for the first time. ... People can change their existing email address on their registration form after the fact in order to avoid the error and use the mail functionality of Workplace Collaboration Services Live Showcase.

At first I thought I misread 30 as 3, but OK. Seems to work even in Safari, at least as far as I have gotten. Provisioning seems to be broken:
The system could not access your account. Contact your system administrator. CLHBS0048E: The person (CN=vowexxl,o=capi) has no local mail addresses specified in the LDAP directory. The address book still uses an application/x-oleobject (msxml3.cab).
And of course it is dog slow. :-)
